United States (NBC NATIONAL NEWS) — The Black Elk Energy CEO is speaking after today's explosion.
CEO John Hoffman thinks the explosion happened because workers used a cutting torch rather than a cold cutting device during construction efforts.
Hoffman emphasized that the situation is still under investigation and that the company's current priority is its missing and injured employees.
The coast guard is still searching for two crew members who went missing after the explosion and fire.
"I've been in this industry for over three decades, and this is the first situation that I've had to deal with,” stated Hoffman. “I can tell you that it hurts. It hurts bad."
Hoffman says his company is working with authorities to determine exactly what happened.
