NBC News — Clouds of smoke were seen and explosions heard across Gaza City early thursday morning as Israel continued its offensive against Hamas. Air attacks targeted Hamas training facilities and rocket launchers. It is the most intense attack on Gaza since its full scale war four years ago. Ten Palestinians were killed and more than 90 were hurt. Hamas militants continued to fire rockets into southern Israel.
Residents on both sides took cover anticipating another day of intense fighting. Israel launched the operation in response to several days of rocket fire from the Palestinian territory. The Israelis killed a top Hamas commander on wednesday. The violence has further damaged Israel's already strained relations with Egypt. Cairo has recalled its ambassador in response to the Israeli operation.
