Gonzales, La (NBC33) — People living in Gonzales got a new place to shop, and help out people with intellectual and developmental disabilities at the same time.
The store is called Treasures of the Arc. The Communities Opportunities of East Ascension and their clients cut the ribbon on their new thrift store.
It's located off of Highway 44 in Gonzales.
COEA leaders say they chose to open a store because they noticed an increase in jobs for the retail industry, and they want their customers to be prepared.
"We focus a lot on work training, and retail is such a huge industry. A lot of our clients do not have any experience, so this will give them an opportunity to get some experience,” stated Cheryl Rice with COEA. “So when they go out in the community and an employer asks is they have experience, they can say, “Absolutely.’”
The workers will get to learn how to sort merchandise and work a cash register. The Arc is also accepting donations of used clothing and home décor to help stock the shelves.
