ASCENSION PARISH,LA (NBC33) — Deputies in Ascension Parish are trying to solve a rash of burglaries. They've been happening in the St. Amany area on roads like Beco, Billingsley, and Edward Guidry. Now, people in that area are taking steps before they become a victim.
"Their cars were parked right underneath the street light and they just went right in and got the wallet right off the dash," said Jerry Babin.
Babin's son in law is just one of hand full of victims in the St. Amant area who have been robbed over the past week.
"My neighbor on this side of me had a wallet stolen, too," he added.
But Jerry and his neighbors were lucky only small items were stolen; Tracy Lamaire was a little less fortunate.
"Me and my husband went to bed that night and got up the next morning and the car was gone," she said.
Of all the car burglaries in this area all of the cars were unlocked; this is why the Sheriff is asking anyone with a vehicle to make sure it’s locked, all the time.
"I lived here all my life and we never had to lock up everything like that,” said Lamaire.
"Well we never had to lock doors around here before, you know," Babin added.
Tracy and Jerry both agree the rash of crime needs to stop before more people are victimized.
"Well when you have your car paid for and someone steals it, it's kind of sickening," says Lamaire.
Both have learned to lock up and be extra protective from now on.
"I keep my doors looked keep a watchful eye," says Babin.
But now Tracy is just one victim who says she feels violated, and will have to find a new sense of security.
"I don’t like it, it’s scary."
The most important thing you can do is call the Sheriff’s Office to report a crime or any suspicious activity. You can also report a tip through their anonymous alert system by texting APSO and a message to 847411, that's tip 411.
