ETHEL, WA (KCPQ) — Lewis County Sheriff's deputies arrested a 19-year-old Ethel man after receiving reports he had punched a 5-month-old puppy.
Shortly before 1 a.m. Friday, deputies responded to the 100 block of Oyler Road -- a family member had called police to request assistance with another family member who was acting disorderly.
At the scene, a deputy saw the 19-year-old in the street and said he was drunk and agitated. Family members said the teen was out of control and had punched the German Shepherd puppy in the face. They also said they believed the puppy had been thrown against a tree.
When deputies found the dog, they saw it had one eye that was extremely swollen and that she was limping. Deputies then brought the dog to a veterinary clinic where an examination determined it had injuries consistent with head trauma. The dog's leg was not broken and she was kept overnight for observation.
The 19-year-old was arrested and booked into Lewis County Jail for first-degree Animal Cruelty. He is also being investigated for underage possession of alcohol.
"I am very proud of the deputy's actions in this incident," Sheriff Steve Mansfield said. "His swift action both in going above and beyond to seek medical care for this animal in the middle of the night, and transporting it to a veterinary clinic made a positive difference for this animal and its owners. I am also grateful for the willingness of the veterinarian to assist us in caring for the puppy."
