GEISMAR, LA — A man was killed in a single-vehicle accident on Monday, according to Lt. Col. Bobby Webre of the Ascension Parish Sheriff’s Office.
The Sheriff’s Office traffic division was dispatched to the scene where it was determined that Damon M. Thomas, 35, of Baton Rouge was traveling on Stevenson Road, near Highway 73 in Geismar, when he lost control of his vehicle at a high rate of speed and he veered off the roadway.
The traffic division’s investigation revealed that Thomas was not wearing a seat belt when his vehicle went airborne striking a tree and landing in New River Canal. Thomas was ejected from the vehicle and succumbed to his injuries.
Traffic investigators anticipate alcohol may have been a factor in the cause of the accident and toxicology is pending test results from the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab.
