NBC News — Security is being increased in Beijing ahead of the country's once a decade power transition. China is imposing new security rules ahead of its big leadership change. Model airplanes, pencil sharpeners, balloons, homing pigeons, kitchen knives and other sharp objects are among the list of things banned from the city center.
The security measures have been phased in over the past week in time for thursday's opening of a meeting of the central committee. Beijing always tightens security for high-profile political events, and this one is the most pivotal for the communist party in 10 years.
