NBC NATIONAL NEWS — Throughout the Northeast communities hit by one of the worst storms ever to sttrike the region are waking up to another of day of disaster.

Hundreds are still stranded in communities left unrecognizable by Sandy.

Homes sit ripped from their foundations and streets now resemble sand dunes.

In Seaside Heights, New Jersey pieces of the town's amusement park now sit half submerged in the sea.

In Point Pleasant residents hope chest-high flood waters will recede.

First responders are still trying to rescue victims cut off by the storms powerful tidal surge.

Tidal flooding paralyzed much of lower Manhattan as well, filling subway lines and tunnels, even covering the runways at LaGuardia airport.

In Queens fire, not water, proved the biggest threat, leaving more than 100 homes unrecognizable.

President Obama will travel to New Jersey later in the day to survey the devastation with Governor Chris Christie.
