SHREVEPORT, LA (KMSS) — A woman is fighting for her life after she wrecked her vehicle dodging a mattress in the roadway.
On Sunday, at 9:16 p.m., emergency crews were dispatched to a rollover crash on I-49 southbound near the West 70th Street on ramp. When officers arrived at the scene, they found an SUV had driven off the roadway and had fallen about 60 feet to the ground below. The driver inside was seriously injured at the time, but is now listed as only having minor injuries.
Authorities believe the driver, Kiara Williams, 23, of Shreveport, lost control of her SUV while swerving to avoid a mattress in the roadway. Firefighters were able to pull Williams from the wreckage and transferred her to a local hospital with serious injuries.
Officials believe the driver's seatbelt saved her life.
Due to the nature of the crash and in accordance to state laws, investigators will submit a sample of William's blood to the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab for toxicological analysis. At this point, there is no evidence to suggest that alcohol is an associated factor this crash. Efforts to determine the origins of the mattress are ongoing at this time.
