NBC NATIONAL NEWS — A reward is being offered by the Humane Society of the United States in the hopes of finding those responsible for a serious case of animal cruelty.
It comes after a dog was dumped from a car window and left to die. It happened late Tuesday in downtown Louisville, Kentucky.
"It was discovered as a woman stopped at a traffic light at Chestnut and Liberty, she said she thought she heard something and she was like looking around and saw a trash bag," explained Rebecca Eaves of the Shamrock Arrow Fund.
Eaves said a man walked up to the driver and the two looked inside. Just under 3.5 pounds, he was shaking and badly injured. A Shamrock Pet Foundation volunteer riding her bike in the area called for help.
"Severe neglect charges should be brought up against the people that had him," Eaves said, "because he was absolutely covered in flea nests, severely anemic, parasites inside and outside, the whole nine yards."
Dr. Scott Rizzo with Blue Pearl Veterinary Partners, who treated the dog added, "There's a couple of pelvic fractures."
Rizzo said those injuries are the likely result of being dropped from a car window onto concrete.
At first, they thought the 2-to3-year-old pup covered in mud and feces was a brown terrier mix, but an intense bath led to a big reveal.
"Sure enough," Dr. Rizzo said of the change, "He's a little maltese and he's white, you never would have thought that when he came in."
The dog is finally getting love and care, but he needed a name. The decided on Karma, created by pet lovers on Facebook angry at the dog's abuser.
"This person," Eaves explained, "Karma will get them back."
"Seeing the picture of that dog in that bag, I haven't slept," she said, adding, "The monster that could stuff it into a bag and discard it on the side of the road makes me sick."
Doctors say Karma is so small he'll likely be able to heal without surgery.
