Baton Rouge, La (NBC33) — Tough news for Southern University. Budget cuts are forcing the school to slash two programs: the master's program in mass communications and the doctor of philosophy program in physical education are being removed.
The school’s mass communications program had recently been denied re-accreditation.
Students on Southern’s campus say it's a big step back.
"It is upsetting,” stated mass communications student Brittny Barnes. “I was looking into Southern to continue my mass communications degree and get a Master's, but now I have to find another HBCU that offers a mass communication program comparable to Southern University’s.”
Southern University declared a financial emergency almost a year ago.
