BATON ROUGE,LA (NBC33) — The Baton Rouge Airport is clearing out twenty acres of land on the north end of the airport. That land will be used to auction off up to 600 used cars a week and as many as 35,000 a year. The Baton Rouge Metro Airport recently ground on the $2 million project.
The facility will be used by the auction broadcasting company of Baton Rouge. The used car auction could potentially bring in dozens of car salesmen through the airport. It will also bring fifty jobs to the capital area. That number could double within the year.
"It's going to create a lot of jobs particularly in the North part of the Baton Rouge area, Jim Caldwell, Baton Rouge Metro Airport, said. "It will be a good revenue source for the airport, additional passengers will help the area hotels, so the economic benefits that will go all around."
The bulk of the cars that will be auctioned off will be cars that have been leased for two or more years. The auction is expected to be up and running by the middle of January 2013.
