Century old churches are landmarks and true gems in south Louisiana, reflecting our heritage and giving us a glimpse of the past. The smaller, simple churches that can be found throughout our cities are just as significant to the generations of people who gathered beneath their roofs. This was the approach taken during renovation of the former Greater Morning Star Baptist Church on Highland Road circa 1896.
After many years in the same location, the Greater Morning Star Baptist Church needed more space. The congregation and the pastor were ready to sell.
"We hoped that someone would treasure the ground that our church was built upon." says Rev. Charles Burris, pastor of Greater Morning Star Baptist Church.
"It's nice to see that the structure was saved so others could see the original purpose of the building. Now, I pray people can go to the shop and feel the feeling of peace."
This Baton Rouge church now has a new life and new purpose thanks to the owner's vision and interest. Sanctuary Home & Gifts pays tribute to the property's former life, and the building will have a life of its own for years to come.
