HENDERSON, LA (NBC33) — 10:45 a.m. UPDATE: State Police told NBC33 News they’re hoping to have one lane of I-10 West near Henderson re-opened late tonight. Both lanes may not be re-opened until sometime tomorrow.
State Police said one of the 18-wheelers involved in the fatal wreck was carrying drilling mud, which is a manufactured product that solidifies and becomes slick with water. Countless gallons of water was used after the crash to get the fire out.
Crews and the DEQ are working to clean the area up, which involves scraping the mud off the Interstate.
7:45am UPDATE: There's still no word on when the stretch of road will reopen. Officials told NBC33 News this morning DEQ is on scene overseeing the clean up. The name of the driver that died, or 4 others hurt haven't been released.
ORIGINAL: Authorities say one person died in a crash involving two 18-wheelers. They say it will be several hours before the West bound lane of I-10 near Henderson reopens as crews attempt to clear the debris and investigate the scene.
Officials tell NBC33 News that an 18-wheeler traveling in the West bound lane of I-10 crossed the median and hit another 18-wheeler that was carrying a flammable compound. That caused the vehicle to catch fire.
One of the drivers involved in the crash died, but officials could not say which driver, or identify the victim at this time.
We’re told I-10 West will remain closed for several hours. The East bound lane is starting to move again, however, a second crash caused by the congestion has shut down traffic for a second time. They could not provide any update on the second crash, however, it has been cleared.
I-10 West bound is being diverted to LA 415 (Lobdell) exit in West Baton Rouge Parish. Traffic is backed up to Butte LaRose on I-10 West and is approaching Breaux Bridge on I-10 East.
