Baton Rouge, La (NBC33) — East Baton Rouge school leaders took time out today to honor some of the district's best students.
Dozens of children have been named as semifinalists for the National Merit and the National Achievement Scholarship Programs.
The programs are academic competition set to provide recognition for outstanding black high school students. Students enter by taking the preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship qualifying test.
One student who got the nod said it's a big step for her education going forward.
“It's actually gotten me a few scholarship offers from colleges,” stated Alexandria Williams. “When they see that, they know it means you're dedicated and you're willing to do what it takes to make the grades.
Finalists are chosen in January.
