WASHINGTON PARISH, LA (NBC33) — A mother from Washington Parish was arrested after her toddler died as a result of brain injury.
The Washington Parish Sheriff’s Office reports that they were originally contacted on Sept. 1, 2012 by Children’s Hospital. A member of the staff told investigators that the injuries sustained by the 15-month-old child did not match the explanation provided by the family.
An investigation was launched and an autopsy revealed that the cause of death could not have been an accident. Officials say the child died from “severe trauma caused by an acceleration/deceleration injury to the brain.”
On Wednesday, Oct. 10, detectives arrested the child’s mother, Heather F. Bennett, for First-Degree Murder.
“There was definite probable cause to obtain an arrest warrant for Mrs. Bennett and the Sheriff’s Office did what is required by Louisiana law,” Sheriff Randy Seal said. “I offer my prayers and sympathy for the Bennett family and the entire community that has been affected by this tragedy.”
Bennett was booked in the Washington Parish Jail.
