BATON ROUGE, LA (NBC33) — Four Baton Rouge doctors have been charged in part of what's being called the biggest Medicare fraud takedown in history.
The investigation included other cities like Chicago, Houston, Brooklyn, and New York. In all, 91 people were taken into custody.
According to federal investigators four doctors here in Baton Rouge filed more than $2-million in fraudulent claims billed to Medicare over six years. Several of the suspects were thought to have worked at a mental health center in Baton Rouge.
"As of today, most of these individuals have been arrested or have surrendered,” Eric Holder, U.S. Attorney General, said. “Charges against these defendants include healthcare fraud, conspiracy to commit healthcare fraud, wire fraud, violations of the anti-kickback statutes, aggravated identity theft and money laundering."
The suspects could face up to 80 years if they're convicted.
