BROUSSARD, LA (NBC33) — A man who was shot and killed by a Lafayette Police Officer has now been connected to a second bank robbery case.
The Broussard Police Department began an investigation for the robbery the Regions Bank that happened on Monday, Sept. 24. Investigators now believe the suspect in this case is the same individual responsible for a robbery that occurred in the Lafayette-area.
On Friday, Sept. 28, a similar robbery occurred  at the Home Bank on Ambassador Caffery Parkway. Officers responded to the call at roughly 3:15 p.m. The suspect entered the bank and handed the teller a note demanding money, and it said that he was armed. He got away with an undisclosed amount of money. However, a vehicle matching the description of the one seen leaving the scene was spotted in the area.
Officers attempted to conduct a traffic stop, however, the vehicle fled and eventually ran off the road into a field. At some point officers fired shots at the suspect, who has been identified as Thomas Helvik, 41, of Port Allen, was pronounced dead at the scene.
Officials with the Broussard Police Department say they have positively identified Helvik as the individual responsible for the robbery of the Regions Bank.
The Louisiana Police Department is currently investigating the circumstances surrounding the shooting. They say the case is still under investigation.
