NBC News — In a controversial move, six U.S. military Osprey hybrid aircraft were transferred to an American base on the southern Japanese island of Okinawa monday. Hundreds of protesters gathered outside the base to protest the move, they say that the plane has a bad safety record and poses a danger to civilians living nearby. The Osprey takes off like a helicopter and flies like an airplane.
Since its development it has been plagued with several safety incidents. Their deployment has re-ignited long standing anger over the large presence of American troops in Japan. More than 50,000 U.S. troops are stationed in the country.
