BATON ROUGE, LA (NBC33) — UPDATE: The suspect was apprehended at 2:40 p.m.
ORIGINAL: A burglary suspect escaped from police custody this morning as he was being transported for medical treatment.
The Baton Rouge Police Department established a perimeter on Polk and Colorado Street, which is located off of Highland Road in second district. They did so after someone called police and described the suspect. The caller said he was wearing handcuffed as well as a walking boot on one leg. We're told the boot was from a previous injury for which he received treatment.
The suspect, Tommy Depedro Wilson, 55, was in police custody. He was arrested at around 8:20 a.m. for an incident that occured on East Lakeshore Drive. Officials say Wilson began complaining of medical issues, so he was transported to a medical facility for treatment. At around 10:30 a.m. he managed to escape.
Details are limited regarding how and where Wilson escaped, but an internal investion will be conducted.
“Customarily when something like this happens we will conduct an administrative investigation to determine if any policies were violated,” Cpl. Tommy Stubbs, Baton Rouge Police Department, said.
East Polk Elementary has been placed on lockdown.
