BOTHELL, Wash. (KCPQ) — Poor air quality in the Kittitas Valley forced Central Washington University to move its football game Saturday against Azusa Pacific University from the CWU campus to a stadium in Bothell.
Smoke from the fires ravaging central and eastern Washington prompted CWU's athletic department to change the location of its home opener to Pop Keeney Stadium, a 4,500-seat stadium located 115 miles east of CWU's campus on NE 118th Street in Bothell.
According to Central Washington University's website, the decision was made as to not subject players or fans to poor air quality and smoke.
"We're excited about having our home opener this weekend," CWU's Athletics director Jack Bishop said on the website. "Unfortunately because of the air quality in the Kittitas Valley being and projected to be the hazardous range we are challenged with finding an alternative site."
The game was well-attended, and fans packed into the stadium to watch the Wildcats beat Azusa Pacific 41-17. Previously purchased tickets were honored at the gate.
Central Washington Football has an overall record of 3-1, and 2-0 in the great Northwest Athletic Conference
