Baton Rouge, La — BREC’s Baton Rouge Zoo is deeply saddened by the loss of a female baby giraffe. The giraffe passed away this morning after Zoo staff conducted its regular morning inspections. The baby was born Monday, September 10.
Cause of death is unknown and a necropsy will be performed.
“We are mourning the loss of our baby this morning,” said Zoo Director Phil Frost. “We truly appreciate the thoughts and support for our staff. The Zoo Keepers are a tremendously dedicated group of people. We have been anticipating this birth for some time, and the loss is hardest on those that care for the giraffes every single day.”
Frost adds, “Death is something that we deal with at the Zoo. Births and deaths are a reality with all living animal collections. This experience will enable us to learn more about animal husbandry, and just like humans, animals are the most vulnerable in the first year of their lives. These facts do not negate the disappointment and sadness we feel today.”
