EUNICE, LA (NBC33) — A clerk at a local grocery store helped police catch a scam artist in the Eunice area.
Dustin Chapman, 23, is in the Evangeline Parish jail tonight. Eunice police tell us he got hold of a routing number, then printed checks made out to himself.
Police say he got away with it one time, but the second time he went to the same store clerks weren't buying it. The business owners and officers learned that all checks had the same routing and bank account numbers on the bottom but different business titles on the upper portion.
Officials say the clerk at the store where he attempted to cash the check noticed discrepancies, so she photocopied it, as well as Chapman’s license and told him that she could not cash the check.
Chapman is charged with Monetary Instrument Abuse (3 counts), Attempted Felony Theft (1 count), Attempted Felony Theft (2 counts), and Felony Theft (1 count).
Investigators say Chapman is still under investigation for other computer generated checks that he has cashed at other businesses in the Eunice area.
