Baton Rouge, La (NBC33) — Broadmoor Middle School held a pep rally today for the 62 newest members of City Year.
The 17 to 24-year-olds will work with staff in four East Baton Rouge Parish schools for the next year to help increase the graduation rate.
City Year corps members say because they are similar in age to the students, it may be easier for the students to relate to them than with teachers.
"Our corps members are what we call ‘peer role models’. They're close in age to the students,” stated Laura Hamm with City Year. “The students have a special bond with them that they may not with teachers and administrations, and they tell our City Year corps members things that they might not tell anyone else; they are able to build strong mentor relationships."
This marks the eighth year of the City Year program in Baton Rouge.
