NBC News — Syrians trying to escape the civil war in their country have sought safety elsewhere. But refugees trying to flee to Turkey report fighting near the border which has prevented many people from crossing. Opposition activists say that some 10,000 Syrian refugees have been stranded for a week on the Syrian side of the border because of fighting.
Turkey already hosts some 80,000 Syrians who escaped the 17 month old uprising. In Jordan, some 66,000 Syrians have crossed through the border area with the help of the Jordanian government. The refugees have been provided with safe passage and water along the way.
