LOUISIANA (NBC33) — The BP oil spill from 2010 is still being hashed out in the nation's courts.
The U.S. Department of Justice is accusing BP of gross negligence and a "culture of corporate recklessness."
The charge could significantly increase the damages BP could be forced to pay in the case.
The DOJ filed complaints Friday against BP and Transocean - the owner and operator of the Deepwater Horizon rig, which failed.
It was in response to BP seeking final approval of a $7.8 billion settlement from the Eastern District Court of Louisiana.
The Justice Department says it doesn't object to the terms of that deal, but it wants the court to keep the option open of additional liability for BP and Transocean.
