Tangipahoa Parish, La (NBC33) — New developments today show the situation in southern Mississippi and northern parts of Tangipahoa Parish are improving.
Mississippi crews are still working on a controlled breach of the dam at the Percy Quin State Park.
Governor Jindal says the pressure has been relieved, and the dam isn't in as much danger of breaking. The governor went on to explain that the water level is actually lower than it was at this time yesterday.
Those in the evacuation area, within half a mile of the river on the east or west from Kentwood south, still need to pay close attention - that's between 40,000 and 60,000 people. Many are still in shelters tonight.
If the controlled breach continues as planned, very little impact is expected in Louisiana and residents should be allowed to return home soon.
