PRAIRIEVILLE, LA (NBC33) — Lloyd Materre wasn't going to miss out on what is for him a once in a lifetime chance to get his teeth fixed for free.
"To hear talk of doctor Gary Bailey offering his services. I had to hitchhike, walk and get a couple of rides just to get here," says Materre.
Materre did everything he could to make the more than twenty mile trek from his home in Donaldsonville to get dental work done at 'Absolute Quality Care' in Prairieville.
"I was determined to get here. nothing was going to stop me,” states Materre.
And there's a reason for his determination. He hasn't gotten work done on his teeth in ten years. And he probably couldn't have afforded it any time soon especially when he just got laid off last week.
"I've been neglecting having dental work done basically cause I don't have the funds to do it," says Materre
Doctor Gray bailey and two other dentists are the reasons Materre and more than 30 other people got badly needed work done on their teeth. Bailey says helping out people like Materre is why he became a dentist in the first place.
"I'm glad I can help him out. That's what I'm here for and I wish I could do it more often," says Bailey
And he will. He's planning on doing it again next year. As for Materre, he knows exactly what he's going to do once Bailey fixes his teeth.
"Eat some of my favorite foods. I've been missing for a long time, like peanuts and stuff like that," states Materre.
