THIBODAUX, LA (NBC33) — A man arrested for his second DWI admitted to police that he interfered with the interlock device installed in his vehicle to gain the ability to drive while intoxicated.
The Thibodaux Police Department reports that an officer observed a 1995 F-250 driving on Canal Blvd. on Wednesday, Aug. 22 at around 1:00 a.m. We’re told the vehicle’s license plate wasn’t working. The officer conducted a traffic stop and the driver, Jake Thomas Richard, 24, of Broussard, admitted that he had been drinking.
The officer also noticed that the ignition of the vehicle had an interlock device, which prohibits a person from starting a vehicle if impaired. The officer asked Richard how he was able to start the vehicle with the interlock device. He responded by saying that he is “mechanically inclined.”
Police say Richard had a blood alcohol level of .178 percent. Richard was arrested for second offense DWI and No License Plate Light.
