One in nine Louisiana citizens owed state money

Baton Rouge, La (NBC33) — There's a good chance Louisiana owes you money, according to Louisiana Treasurer John Kennedy.

The state has more than $500 million in unclaimed money. This comes in the form of stocks, bonds, uncashed payroll checks, apartment and utility deposits.

With almost one in nine people in Louisiana owed money, Kennedy says people have a great chance of getting money back from the government.

"We've got over 500,000 names in our database,” stated Kennedy. “There are only about four and a half million people in Louisiana, so your odds are better than winning the lottery - I'll put it that way."
