NEW ORLEANS, LA (WDSU) — The Coast Guard Pollution Response Team is monitoring an area of the Mississippi River where two tug boats sank over the weekend.
It happened Saturday morning in a stretch of the river near Audubon Park.
A Coast Guard spokesman tells WDSU that 3,000 gallons of diesel fuel has been released due to the accident, but boom has been placed around the site, and the area has been contained.
The Coast Guard says there's the potential that 14,000 gallons of diesel fuel could be released.
