The search for the man accused of shooting an East Baton Rouge Sheriffs Deputy has ended .
Dewayne Steward is dead.
Authorities say he shot himself in the head outside a trailer in Hillaryville, near Darrow.
The Ascension Parish Sheriff's Office says it received a tip that Steward was hiding inside the home on Walter Hill Road.
They say a SWAT team staked out the residence for hours and had correspondence with Steward through a "throw phone."
Investigators say Ascension's SWAT team fired tear gas into the trailer after Steward refused to surrender.
They say that is when Steward finally opened the door and pulled the trigger on himself.
Investigators had been trying to track down Steward since he allegedly shot an unnamed EBR deputy in the neck late Tuesday night.
He was facing several charges including first-degree attempted murder of a peace officer, flight from an officer and resisting arrest.
Investigators say they are still trying to find out why Steward was hiding in Hillaryville.
