ST. JOHN THE BAPTIST PARISH, La (NBC33) — Residents of the Scenic Riverview Mobile Home Park were startled awake Thursday morning by a crime that's shattered their sense of peace, possibly forever.
"At about 5:02 this morning - I looked at my clock - I heard bullets, shots being fired," stated resident Joann Stevenson.
"We were all home, obviously asleep,” said resident Katie Vicknair. “I woke up about 5:30, 6:00 to bring my children to a school event and I woke up to several officers at the front of our street."
For some, the sound of rounds of bullets being fired into the air, yards from where they sleep, is a terrifying experience they won't soon forget.
Some residents were even separated from their own children for close to an hour while the scene was secured. For them, the wait was agonizing.
Nancy Garza stated, "Just knowing that my kids are so helpless in there. I know there's a lot of people there, but bring their mother and their father here too. We couldn't come near our kids. It was very, very scary. "
Standup residents who live just yards from where the shooting happened say they didn't have much interaction with their neighbors who lived just behind them in that trailer. But they do say they're shocked and worried. Some say they're not even prepared to live there anymore.
