LAFOURCHE PARISH, LA — Lafourche Parish Sheriff Craig Webre reported a Cut Off teenager has been booked with theft and burglary charges after an investigation that began in February 2012. Steven R. Thomas, 18, has been charged in several crimes and is a suspect in several others.
On February 5, 2012, deputies received a report of a stolen pickup truck from a residence on E. 22nd Street in Larose. The truck was located in Texas on February 9, just over two miles from Thomas’ listed address of 135 School Road in Vidor, Texas. Then on February 15, deputies received a report that a sport-utility vehicle had been found abandoned approximately one mile from Thomas’ Cut Off address. Deputies discovered the SUV had been reported stolen out of Vidor, Texas.
On June 29, deputies responded to two reports of car burglaries on East Main Street in Cut Off wherein a laptop was stolen from each vehicle overnight. Through investigation, detectives also discovered a subject had attempted to enter a home on East Main Street, and a another vehicle was burglarized at that residence.
On July 8, deputies received another report of auto theft from a residence on E. 43rd Street in Cut Off. Deputies were notified a few days later that the truck had been discovered in Orange County, Texas. Deputies in Orange County had attempted to initiate a traffic stop on the vehicle, but the driver refused to stop. The driver eventually pulled into a residential yard in Vidor, Texas, and fled on foot. Two passengers in the truck remained inside the vehicle and later identified Thomas as the driver.
On July 18, Thomas was arrested in St. Martin Parish for possession of a stolen vehicle. Thomas had been on probation for three counts of auto thefts and two counts of simple burglary (in unrelated cases) when he was arrested. He was therefore transported to the Lafourche Parish Detention Center on July 25 and held without bond for the Louisiana Department of Probation and Parole.
Then in late July, detectives received an anonymous tip via Bayou Region Crime Stoppers identifying Thomas as a possible suspect in several vehicle burglaries in the South Lafourche area. Detectives interviewed Thomas at the Detention Center, and Thomas admitted to several of the crimes.
On August 13, Thomas was booked with three counts of motor vehicle theft, three counts of simple burglary and attempted burglary of an inhabited dwelling. His bond is set at $70,000 for the charges, but he continues to be held without bond for Probation and Parole. Detectives say Thomas is also being investigated in reference to several other burglaries in the Cut Off area.
