BATON ROUGE (NBC33) — In Caddo Parish, firefighters spent much of the day today battling a fire at a Shreveport funeral home. One body was inside, but we're told the owners of Patterson Funeral Home were able to get themselves and the body out without any problems. The fire started around 5:30 this morning. It took twelve trucks to fight the fire as firefighters spent hours putting out hot spots.
In East Baton Rouge Parish, homes and businesses on Marketplace Avenue, just off Sherwood Forest, were evacuated around nine this morning because of a foul odor coming from a vehicle. As a precaution, the Baton Rouge Police Bomb Squad, was called in to make sure the vehicle did not contain any bombs. They issued an all clear around 2:30 pm.
In Caddo Parish, all the chimps at Chimp Haven are now on birth control. That’s because Ginger, a 42 year old former pet and research chimp, gave birth to a baby girl. Ginger’s was the second “surprise” pregnancy at the 200 acre retirement center for chimps. Caretakers at Chimp Haven say the male chimps had already had vasectomies, but now out of an abundance of caution, they’re putting the females on birth control. Ginger's baby girl is "healthy". We’re told she'll be raised at Chimp Haven.
