Chandler, AZ (KPHO) — A 22-year-old registered sex offender was arrested Sunday evening on suspicion of assaulting an 11-year-old boy in the men's restroom at Red Robin Restaurant in Chandler, police said.
John Chavez, of Mesa, grabbed the boy in the restroom, rubbed the child's shoulders, and told him he would be at his house later in the evening, said Chandler Police Department Detective Seth Tyler.
The child attempted to leave the restroom but Chavez blocked his path, Tyler said. The child was eventually able to get away and Chavez fled in a red pick-up truck.
After telling his mother what happened, Chandler police officers arrived at the scene at 3420 W. Chandler Blvd. and were advised of a single-vehicle crash nearby.
Officers said they were able to identify Chavez as the driver of the pick-up truck, as well as the suspect in the assault. Alcohol is believed to be a factor in the collision, Tyler said.
Chavez was initially placed under arrest for DUI and taken to a local hospital, where he underwent treatment for his injuries from the collision.
After his release from the hospital, Chavez was booked into the Maricopa County Jail on one count each of assault, disorderly conduct, unlawful imprisonment, DUI, and DUI with a blood alcohol content of .08 or above.
Chavez is a Level Two registered sex offender. He was convicted of child molestation in 2010. His sentence was suspended, and he was placed on lifetime probation.
