BATON ROUGE, LA (NBC33) — LSU's Head Coach Les Miles took time out today to set the record straight when it comes to Tyrann Mathieu's role in 2012, and any possible role in 2013.
It's likely Mathieu could end up back on the field, but as of now the question remains as to where and how soon the “Honey Badger” makes his return to college football.
Coach Les Miles met with the media today, staying strong to the university's word that they won't speculate beyond this season and the possible return of Tyrann Mathieu to LSU. There were reports that Mathieu would make a decision by Wednesday, but his family released a statement today saying "they are taking time to heal and that they don't expect a decision by Wednesday."
"I certainly am rooting for Ty and whatever his future is, but I'm not focused on him,” Coach Miles said today. “I've got games to play…I've got 104 guys that I have to be ready for.
“I know this is a very key time in (Mathieu's) life, and I hope the decisions he makes are in his best interest for the long term,” Miles continued. “We'll help any way we can. He won’t play for this football team this year. That's a fact I have no idea beyond that."
So, these three options are on the table for Mathieu: if he wants to play this year, he'll have to drop down to a division two school; if he wants to play at the division one level, that would mean Mathieu would have to sit out a year; if he wants to stay at LSU he'll have to sit out but as of now, it's unclear if he'll be allowed back on the field for the Tigers.
