NBC NATIONAL NEWS — Body Shapers are not just for celebrities any more.
It's a multi-million dollar industry that women say is helping them look and feel their best, not just for a night on the town, but every day.
The problem is, wear a pair that's too tight or even multiple body shapers and that can lead to some major health problems.
Dr. Farzaneh Sabi is an OB/GYN at Kaiser Permanente says, "A little bit of something is great, but sometimes when you over do it, you can actually cause harm, and some of the things we worry about can range from annoying infections to also life threatening things like blood clots."
"When women wear really tightly configured clothing, sometimes it can decrease the blood flow or what we call circulation to the body and what that can do is that it can actually lead to blood clots and those blood clots can travel to the lungs, to the heart and parts of the brain and that can lead to even death," says Sabi.
Other complications can include nerve damage and bacterial infections.
Sabi encourages women not to wear body shapers that are too small and to also be accepting of their bodies.
And of course, a body shaper is no substitute for diet and exercise.
Because a the end of the day, eating well and working out regularly is going to make everyone, male or female, feel their best.
