BATON ROUGE, LA (NBC33) — The kids won't be in the classrooms till tomorrow, but today was the first day back on the job for teachers in East Baton Rouge Parish.
Hundreds of them met for a convocation at Southern University's campus. The focus was to celebrate the successes and growth in the school system. It was also a time to find ways to increase student achievement in the parish. Teachers who attended the event say it really got them excited about the upcoming school year.
"I felt part of a whole part of a team unit,” Jelissa Bates, teacher, said. “Just the music, the dancing and the singing and all the professionalism. I just really felt, like I'm becoming a woman. I'm entering my career and I'm alive. I feel great right now."
East Baton Rouge Parish Superintendent Bernard Taylor was the keynote speaker at today's convocation.
