LAFAYETTE, LA (NBC33) — UPDATE: Lafayette Parish's Chief Administrative officer, Dee Stanley, tells NBC33 News that Lafayette Police Chief Jim Craft announced to the Lafayette City Parish council, he feels confident police have found Mickey Shunick's body. We're told Lafayette Police have notified Mickey Shunick's family of the new developments.
ORIGINAL: Cpl. Paul Mouton with the Lafayette Police Department has confirmed that a body was discovered this morning in Evangeline Parish, but they will not say whether it is that of Mickey Shunick.
We’re told that a credible source close to the investigation provided detailed information regarding the location of the body. That information was provided this morning. A task force was dispatched to search the location and a body was found.
The body was located near LA-10 heading towards Oakdale in Evangeline Parish.
Officials say they hope to have a concrete answer later this evening as to whether or not the body is in fact Mickey Shunick.
A representative for the Mickey Shunick family issued the following statement:
"We appreciate all the efforts of the law enforcement agencies, Searchers and Volunteers," Margaret Bearb, coordinator for the volunteer effort, writes. "We know that the media has reported that Mickey Shunick's body was found in Evangeline Parish, however, as of right now, and until an official press release is made by the proper officials, we cannot report, either way, that a body found was that of Mickey.
"Also, we ask that you please respect the Shunick family by allowing them the privacy they need at this time. It has been, and still is, a long journey in the search to find Mickey, so we truly feel that they deserve some time alone until they are ready to respond to the current rumor."
We will update with any new information as soon as it becomes available.
