ACADIA PARISH, LA (NBC33) — A new computer virus is circulating Louisiana. This one claims to be from the FBI and McAfee antivirus software.
The Acadia Parish Sheriff’s Office issued the alert on Friday, Aug. 3. They say at least one resident from the Crowley area has reported being a victim of the scam.
An email containing a logo for McAfee as well as the FBI is sent to the potential victim. It requests a fee of $200 to prevent a potential problem for your computer. However, if you click the attached link, your computer will be disabled and you will be out $200.
If you get an email claiming to be from one of these agencies, delete it immediately.
The Sheriff’s office says the scam has been reported to the FBI. No additional details were provided.
If you feel you are a victim of this scam, contact the Sheriff's Office in your parish.
