BATON ROUGE, LA (NBC33) — People living in the Gardere community came out to celebrate family fun day Saturday.
The Gardere Youth Alliance hosted the event to give kids a safe day to play. The group organizes activities for kids from football to cheerleading through out the school year.
The event also honored a former basketball player with the Gardere Alliance Malcolm Fitzgerald Johnson. The 19-year-old was murdered in June.
"People in the community need to see that you can still have fun and don't have to have the violence that's out there in the clubs or the after effects," said Gardere Youth Alliance founder, Darin Fontenette.
