LOUISIANA (NBC33) — Here's a frightening statistic: the number of West Nile cases nation-wide is higher than it's been in eight years.
Most of the human cases have been reported in Texas, Oklahoma and Mississippi, but Louisiana has seen 33 cases this year. Nearly 250 cases have been reported nationwide, four people have died, and we haven't even reached the mid-August mark when officials say infections tend to peak.
Experts say the best way to protect yourself is to wear mosquito repellant and protective clothing, and to make sure you empty standing water.
