Expecting moms on welfare in Louisiana may soon be subject to random drug tests.
A bill backed by Rep. John LaBruzzo would allow the state to test 20% of people under the Family Independence Temporary Assistance Program.
FITAP is a program that helps families with children who can't pay their bills.
The proposal will place priority on testing pregnant women.
LaBruzzo says the bill is meant to keep welfare recipients from wasting your tax dollars.
He says every premature birth as a result of drugs costs the state $30,000.
If just three of those births could be prevented he claims his initiative pays for itself.
