HAMMOND, LA — Head coach Ron Roberts welcomed back 50 returning letterwinners, including 21 starters, and a bevy of newcomers on Tuesday as Southeastern Louisiana University officially opened its fall football camp.
Players began checking into the Dugas Center for Southeastern Athletics Tuesday morning before going through meetings and orientation with school officials in the afternoon. After taking physicals and being issued equipment, the Lions held their first official meeting in the evening.
“Today was pretty smooth, it was mostly NCAA paperwork and making sure everyone had the paperwork they needed,” Roberts said. “We wanted to make sure we have the necessary things taken care of before we start Wednesday on football.
Southeastern, which opens the season Sept. 1 at SEC newcomer Missouri, will officially practice for the first time Wednesday at 4:50 p.m. in Strawberry Stadium. All practices are open to the public.
“The first couple of days, it’s going to be a lot of teaching,” Roberts said. “We have about 30 new players that have to get accustomed to how we do things and we have to do that pretty quickly and get them entrenched. We’ll go back over some things (from spring practice) from square one with offensive and defensive schemes and we’re going to go a pretty good pace. There’s going to be a lot thrown at them, especially in the first 10 days.”
Roberts also announced that a pair of Houston, Texas natives – former Texas Tech linebacker Cqulin Hubert (pronounced Que-lin) and Blinn Junior College defensive tackle Jeremy Williams – have each transferred to play for the Lions.
Hubert, a 6-foot-1 240 pounder product, spent the past two seasons at Big 12 member Texas Tech where he played in 11 games in 2011 for the Red Raiders and finished as the team’s sixth-leading tackler with 38 stops.
Hubert, who will have two years of eligibility remaining, recorded 5.5 tackles for loss, one interception and one forced fumble. As a freshman in 2010, Hubert tallied 31 stops with a career-high 13 tackles against Northwestern in the TicketCity Bowl.
“I expect him to come in here and make an immediate impact,” Roberts said of Hubert, who was a three-star prospect coming out of high school by Rivals.com. “He gives us another pass rusher on the edge and hopefully he can give that to us.”
Williams, a 6-1, 285-pound product, will look to help on run defense after he tallied 26 tackles last season at Blinn. A two-star prospect by Rivals.com, Williams helped the Buccaneers to a 9-2 record and a No. 10 ranking in the final NJCAA poll.
“He’s a guy we’re looking to make a huge impact on our defensive front,” Roberts said. “He’s another guy we’re looking for to come in here and push for a (starting) job and be in that hunt early. He’s another big body that will help improve our size and physicality on the front line.”
