GONZALES, LA ( NBC33) — The Gonzales Police Department unveiled a brand new facility today
The new building costs $4.8 million and is 19,000 square feet, which is more than four times the size of the department's old building.
The police added new technology to interrogation rooms, and the new building has more room for storing evidence.
Gonzales Police Chief Sherman Jackson says the new station will give police extra protection to keep them safe while handling people who have been arrested.
"They can actually go into a squad room where prisoners are not being held and can concentrate on their paperwork,” stated Jackson. “There were incidents where officers had to end up fighting with somebody that was under arrest, in close quarters. None of us like physical contact.”
Chief Jackson says police will also offer new youth outreach classes and elderly safety classes at the new facility.
