Baton Rouge, La — BREC’s Baton Rouge Zoo invites you to sprint, gallop or hop to the finish line to claim the much-coveted ostrich egg trophy. Join Club South Runners at the Zoo for our annual Zoo Zoom 5K on Saturday, August 25. The day includes our Kids’ Half-Mile Fun Run at 7:45 a.m., so the whole family can participate, immediately followed by the 5K at 8:15 a.m.
“We have a new route this year,” said Zoo Director Phil Frost. “The Zoo Zoom 5K actually takes our runners through the Zoo, past some of our animals like the elephants, giraffes and flamingos; it’s hard to beat our scenery! Part of the new route includes the beautifully renovated Greenwood Park.”
Registration may be done by mail, at www.brzoo.org or on race day beginning at 6:30 a.m. The fees for the race are $17 for Club South members, $20 for non-Club South members and $24 registration on day of race. Children (12 and under) may pre-register for $12 or register the day of the race for $17. Prizes will be awarded to first male and female overall and in each age group category.
A portion of each registration fee supports the Zoo’s conservation programs for threatened and endangered animals. Cheetahs, in particular, are losing their “race” for survival. The world’s fastest land animal, the cheetah can run up to 70 mph. Loss of habitat, human-animal conflict and loss of genetic variation are the main factors contributing to the cheetah’s declining numbers in the wild.
“Our Zoo Zoom 5K is a great way to have fun while learning about an incredible species – the cheetah,” said Jennifer Shields, education curator. “Our staff will be on-hand before and after the race with some fun animal biofacts and activities for children, but it’s also a time for us to educate our visitors about the cheetah and how critically endangered this species is in the wild.”
