BATON ROUGE, LA (NBC33) — One man is behind bars and police are seeking two others who are accused of robbing and kidnapping an individual in Tiger Land. Police say quick action from patrolling officers in the Tiger Land area is the reason why they were able to apprehend and identify those responsible.
“We believe this is an isolated incident,” Cpl. Tommy Stubbs, Baton Rouge Police Department, explained. “Armed robberies followed by a kidnapping are not a common occurrence for that area.”
The Baton Rouge Police Department reports that the incident occurred at roughly 4:00 a.m. on Tuesday, July 24. The victim, who had just gotten off of work, was approached by three males outside of his home located on the 100 block of East Boyd Street. The suspects allegedly pulled out a gun and demanded his property. Then, they forced the victim to get in his vehicle and drive them to a nearby bank.
The victim was instructed by the suspects to withdraw money from his bank account. The victim complied and was then told to drive back to his home. Once back at the residence the suspects followed the victim inside where they took more property, as well as the keys to his vehicle.
The victim called police immediately after the suspects left the home. Dispatchers quickly alerted patrolling officers in the area with the description of the victim’s vehicle. It was spotted nearby and officers attempted a traffic stop. The suspect, Jonthan Batteau, attempted to outrun police but crashed the vehicle in the process.
“Our officers were aggressively patrolling the Tiger Land area,” Cpl. Stubbs said. “Because of our patrols, we were able to catch one of the guys responsible.”
Batteau was booked into the East Baton Rouge Parish Prison for Armed Robbery and Aggravated Kidnapping. The two additional suspects who fled the scene in their own vehicle have not yet been apprehended. This case is ongoing.
