Baton Rouge, La — Baton Rouge Ballet Theatre will host a summer dance intensive workshop featuring celebrated guest instructor Winthrop Corey and other esteemed artists from July 16 to 20.
This week-long intensive provides a valuable opportunity for area dancers to participate in a rigorous workshop to improve dance technique. Dancers will participate in classes including ballet, advanced pointe, pre-pointe, gyrokinesis, jazz, modern and acro-dance.
Corey will instruct ballet classes during the workshop. Corey received international recognition as a principal dancer with the Royal Winnipeg Ballet and the National Ballet of Canada. He is also the artistic director for the Mobile Ballet Company as well as a summer faculty member for Joffrey Ballet School.
Dancers’ Workshop faculty member and Runnels School dance teacher Mary Camille Maddox will instruct acro-dance classes. Acro-dance combines classical dance technique with precision acrobatic elements. Maddox was the first female gymnastics coach at the Air Force Academy and made the final trials for the 1964 Olympic gymnastics team. Maddox received her master’s degree in dance from Florida State University and is a former LSU dance teacher.
Texas Ballet Theater company trainee and former BRBT dancer Meredith Broussard will teach gyrokinesis during the workshop. Gyrokinesis is a form of exercise that focuses on spinal movement and joint articulation. Broussard has trained at The Royal Ballet School in London.
BRBT principal dancer and LSU Golden Girl Natalie Knight will instruct jazz classes during the intensive. Knight has trained at summer intensive workshops with the American Ballet Theatre New York and Joffrey Ballet San Antonio.
Dancers’ Workshop teacher and BRBT associate director Rebecca Mathews Acosta will teach pointe classes. Acosta is an American Ballet Theatre certified teacher and has completed the American Ballet Theatre Teacher Training Institute. She is also a dance teacher at Forest Heights Academy.
Dancers’ Workshop teacher Jonna Cox will instruct pre-pointe during the intensive. Cox danced professionally with the Dayton Ballet and studied with the Boston Ballet. She holds a BFA in ballet from Texas Christian University.
Modern dance instructor Whitney Dufrene is a senior on academic and dance scholarships at Belhaven University. Dufrene received the 2011 Bezalel Award for Outstanding Artistic Achievement and has danced many roles with BRBT.
BRBT invites all intermediate to advanced level dancers ages 10 and older to register for the intensive workshop. Tuition is $350. Classes are from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. daily, with drop off beginning at 8 a.m. All classes will be located at Dancers’ Workshop, the official studio of BRBT, at 10745 Linkwood Court.
