DENHAM SPRINGS, LA — The 7th Grade Mardi Gras Gators Girls’ Basketball Team will travel to Kissimmee, Fla., next week to compete in the 2012 Youth Basketball of America National Championship Tournament.
The team will compete against other teams from across the nation in two days of pool play on July 2-3, followed by three days of championship bracket play on July 5-7.
The team won second place at the YBOA Super Regional Tournament in Gulfport, Miss., in April, to qualify to compete in the national championship. The team also received a bid from the Louisiana State YBOA Tournament.
Those girls competing for the Mardi Gras Gators team include Caroline Taylor, Christina Canale, Tremeeka Spikes, Kayla Lewis and Raven Barze, all from Southside Junior High School in Denham Springs; Baleigh Elliott from Juban Parc Junior High in Denham Springs; Payton Chustz from Denham Springs Junior High in Denham Springs; Brooke Thompson from Holden Junior High in Holden; Jessica Nesom and Tiffany Stovall from Doyle Junior High in Livingston; Chrislyn Boyd from Lakewood Elementary in Luling; and Cara Ursin from Albert Cammon Middle School in St. Rose. The team is coached by Delia A. Taylor and Lisa Dugas, both of Denham Springs.
